Karl Whitney is a writer and researcher based in Sunderland. He has a PhD in history from University College Dublin, and he has written about popular music and literature for the Irish Times, the Guardian and the Belfast Telegraph. His long-form non-fiction has appeared in the London Review of Books, the Dublin Review, the White Review¸ the Lit Hub and JSTOR Daily. In 2013, he received the John Heygate Award for travel writing. His first book, Hidden City: Adventures and Explorations in Dublin, a non-fiction exploration of his home city, was published by Penguin in 2014 and was a Guardian book of the week.
