Uranias Vater ist da nur eine Schachfigur im perfiden Spiel des Diktators. Während der »Große Wohltäter«, der fast das ganze Land in seinen persönlichen Besitz gebracht hat, Militär, Kirche, amerikanische Botschaft im Schach zu halten vermeint, sind seine Attentäter längst unterwegs – ohne ihrerseits zu ahnen, daß in ihrem Rücken ein machiavellistischer Machtwechsel im Gange ist. Im eisigen Zentrum von Vargas Llosas Roman steht die nur allzu reale Gestalt des General Leónidas Trujillo, genannt »Der Ziegenbock«. Doch der Blick des Schriftstellers dringt unter die historische Haut, macht uns zu Zeitgenossen, zu Mitwissern. Den Verschwörern mit ihrer brennenden Begierde, ihren Demütiger zu beseitigen, den intelligenten Politschranzen und den Opfern gibt der Erzähler seine eindringliche Stimme. Und er schürzt den dramatischen Knoten so gekonnt, daß diese Psychographie der Macht und ihrer Verheerungen wie ein Thriller zu lesen ist.
