Kostjutschenko berichtet über obdachlose Kinder, die sich in der Ruine eines verlassenen Krankenhauses in Moskau eingerichtet haben, besucht zwölf Jahre nach der Geiselnahme die Stadt Beslan, erzählt vom Leben im russischen Hinterland, wo kriminelle Banden, Oligarchen und Provinzfürsten das Sagen haben, begleitet eine 24-Stunden-Schicht in einem Moskauer Polizeirevier und verschafft sich Zutritt zu einem von der Öffentlichkeit abgeschirmten geschlossenen Heim für psychisch Kranke. Sie berichtet von der Annexion der Krim, dem Krieg im Donbass und aus dem belagerten ukrainischen Mykolajiw. Eingebettet werden die Reportagen in sehr persönlich geschriebene Essays, in denen sich die Geschehnisse in Kostjutschenkos eigenen Erfahrungen spiegeln: als junge, lesbische Frau, die während des Aufstiegs von Wladimir Putin erwachsen wird, als LGBTQ-Aktivistin, die bei Demonstrationen wiederholt brutal angegriffen wird, und als Reporterin der Nowaja Gaseta, die die Ermordung von sechs Kolleginnen und Kollegen miterlebt hat.
