Vor 75 Jahren wurden zwei deutsche Staaten gegründet. Ursula Weidenfeld legt eine Geschichte des doppelten Deutschland vor, wie sie so noch nicht geschrieben wurde. Bisher gibt es, zumindest in der westdeutschen Erinnerung, die Bundesrepublik (oder ganz einfach: «Deutschland») und daneben die DDR, üblicherweise als der «zweite deutsche Staat» bezeichnet. Deren Geschichte wird immer von hinten erzählt, vom Ende her - das ist die übliche Strafe für gescheiterte Staaten. Dagegen wird die Geschichte Westdeutschlands von Beginn an geschrieben, ihre Eckpunkte sind die Eckpunkte «Deutschlands» von der Staatsgründung bis heute. Diese Sichtweise aber ignoriert das Offene in der Entwicklung beider politischer Systeme. Ursula Weidenfeld macht es deshalb anders: Sie schildert eine einzigartige Parallel- und Wettbewerbssituation, in der sich zwei Staaten wie die beiden Teile eines Magneten gleichzeitig anzogen und abstießen. Diese beiden Länder einander gegenüberzustellen, sie miteinander und nebeneinander zu betrachten, ergibt eine neue deutsche Geschichte von 1949 bis heute. Gerade weil es keine oder nur wenige gemeinsame Erinnerungen gibt, ist das eine besondere Herausforderung. Ursula Weidenfeld stellt sich ihr und öffnet so einen neuen Blick auf das doppelte Deutschland.
