Ein kurzer Besuch in einem Davoser Sanatorium wird für den Protagonisten Hans Castorp zu einem siebenjährigen Aufenthalt, der Kurort wird zur Bühne für die europäische Befindlichkeit vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg. Im Juli 1913 begonnen, während des Krieges durch essayistische Arbeiten, vor allem durch die 'Betrachtungen eines Unpolitischen', unterbrochen, konnte der Roman 1924 abgeschlossen und veröffentlicht werden. Der Band 5 der 'Großen kommentierten Frankfurter Ausgabe' folgt dem Erstdruck.
