Hugos bescheidene Erzählung, die Tagebuchaufzeichnungen eines Verurteilten über die letzten Wochen seines Lebens bis zum Schafott, ist ein leidenschaftliches Plädoyer gegen die Todesstrafe. 'Ich kenne kein ehrenvolleres, kein edleres Ziel als dieses, die Abschaffung der Todesstrafe', bemerkt er in einer drei Jahre nach Erstpublikation (1829) geschriebenen Einleitung. 'Von Herzen schließe ich mich den Wünschen und Taten guter Menschen in allen Nationen an, die seit Jahren daran arbeiten, diesen auch von Revolutionen nicht entwurzelten Baum zu stürzen, den Galgen.' Historisch bezieht sich Hugo auf eine Reihe von Hinrichtungen, die 'niemals auf grausamere Weise geschahen' als nach der Julirevolution von 1830.
