Vom Beginn des Jahrhunderts bis zu Adenauer Mit dem Erscheinen der ›Blechtrommel‹ 1959 gewann der deutsche Nachkriegsroman Anschluß an die Weltliteratur und Oskar der Trommler seinen festen Platz in der modernen Mythologie. Anfang der 50er Jahre trommelt und schreibt in einer Heil- und Pflegeanstalt ein Buckliger des Jahrgangs 1924 die Geschichte seines Lebens und seiner Familie vom Begin des Jahrhunderts bis in das Deutschland Adenauers. Oskar Matzerath hat alles gesehen und gehört, nichts ist ihm entgangen, denn er war ein hellhöriger Säugling, dessen geistige Entwicklung bereits bei der Geburt abgeschlossen war. Der Außenseiter, der Wirklichkeit ertrommeln und Glas zersingen kann, erweist sich dabei als der einzige Gesunde in einer Welt des Scheins, der Lüge und des Verbrechens. Am Ende seiner phantastischen Autobiographie, die Oskar vom Vorkriegs-Danzig bis ins Düsseldorf der Nachkriegszeit führt, »entdeckt man, daß man über Deutschland und Mitteleuropa – sowohl in der Zeit des Völkermordes als auch im Biedermeier der Restauration – mehr weiß als je zuvor«.
