Hugbert Flitner hat die Kunstwerke zum Thema Eisenbahn ausgesucht, weil er einen persönlichen Zugang zu diesem faszinierendem Verkehrsmittel hat: Seine väterlichen Großeltern kamen aus dem herkömmlichen Fuhrgewerbe der Pferdezeit und haben die Veränderungen ihrer Umwelt noch persönlich erlebt und beschreiben können. Auch die Künstler mussten sich damit auseinandersetzen und haben schon früh bei aller Begeisterung für die technische Revolution erkannt, dass damit auch soziales Elend verbunden ist und die Umwelt bedroht wird. Dieser Spur geht das Buch nach, indem es großartige Kunstwerke daraufhin befragt und die Malerei zum Thema bis heute zeigt.
