Dessen spannendes und turbulentes Leben setzt er in Die Kunst zu fliehen wie ein Puzzle zusammen: seine Herkunft aus einer Familie, als hätte Ingmar Bergman sie in Fanny und Alexander nachgeahmt; seine zur Perfektion getriebene Unfähigkeit, mit Geld umzugehen; sein Scheitern in der europäischen Kunstwelt, die gerade de Chirico und andere Modernisten feierte. Und: sein dramatisches Geheimnis, das Widforss in die USA f liehen ließ, wo er am Ende doch zu Ruhm gelangte. Sjöberg selbst übt sich dabei schreibend in der Kunst der Eskapade und entführt seine Leser immer wieder auf Nebenwege, in fremde Länder und ferne Zeiten. Man folgt ihm staunend und glücklich nur zu gern – wohin auch immer.
