Schon bald steigt der Seelenverkäufer in höhere gesellschaftliche Kreise auf und sieht sich verheißenden Zukunftsaussichten gegenüber, doch als seine „Geschäftspartner“ anfangen, laut darüber spekulieren, ob sie die »toten Seelen« nicht vielleicht zu billig verkauft haben, kommt es zum Skandal. Die toten Seelen sind Gogols einziger Roman und verhalfen ihm zu literarischem Weltruhm. Gogol zeigt sich hier als großartiger Meister der Groteske und der Satire.
