Dem Goethe der klassischen Epoche war die Sturm-und-Drang-Fassung seines Faust nicht mehr recht geheuer: »Einige tragische Szenen waren in Prosa geschrieben, sie sind durch ihre Natürlichkeit und Stärke, in Verhältnis gegen das andere, ganz unerträglich. Ich suche sie deswegen gegenwärtig in Reime zu bringen, da denn die Idee wie durch einen Flor durchscheint, die unmittelbare Wirkung des ungeheuern Stoffes aber gedämpft wird.« Das Ergebnis dieser langwierigen Überarbeitungsphase ist die klassische, »entschärfte« Fassung von 1808, wie wir sie heute vor allem kennen. Die früheste erhaltene Fassung, früher »Urfaust« genannt, präsentiert diese Neuausgabe: überprüft an der Handschrift, genauestens kommentiert und mit einem hilfreichen Nachwort versehen.
