GEO EPOCHE „Der Krieg in Vietnam“: Am Morgen des 8. März 1965 springen 3.500 US-Soldaten aus ihren Landungsbooten auf den feinen Sand des Strandes in der Nähe der Hafenstadt Da Nang. Lächelnde vietnamesische Mädchen hängen ihnen Blumengirlanden um den Hals und halten ein Schild hoch, auf dem in Englisch steht: „Willkommen den ritterlichen Marines“. In diesem vermeintlich friedlichen Idyll vollzieht sich der Schicksalsmoment eines Jahrhundertkonflikts: Die Vereinigten Staaten entsenden die ersten offiziellen Kampftruppen nach Vietnam. Wenig später schlagen sie die erste Schlacht gegen kommunistische Einheiten – und siegen. Amerikanische Militärs wie Politiker sind geradezu euphorisch. Binnen Kurzem, so meinen sie, werden sie den Krieg gewinnen. Es ist ein für alle Seiten fataler Trugschluss. Denn dieser Krieg ist nicht zu gewinnen.
