Der in Osnabrück geborene Autor verarbeitete in seinem Roman die Erlebnisse seiner Generation im ersten Weltkrieg und verdeutlichte durch seine realistisch-subjektivistische Schilderungen die Grausamkeit und Sinnlosigkeit des Krieges. Das Buch ist ein zutiefst berührender Appell an die Menschlichkeit, gegen das Vergessen und gegen den Krieg. Der Roman, der mit dem Heldenpathos brach, wurde 1933 von den Nazis verbrannt. Für den Meller Künstler Peter Eickmeyer war es, wie er selbst schreibt, eine 'Herzensangelegenheit', Remarques Werk mit den Mitteln der Graphic Novel umzusetzen.
