Ein Jahr Hölle in Auschwitz Dieser Band beschreibt das Jahr, das Primo Levi in Auschwitz verbracht hat: vom Februar 1944 bis zum Januar 1945. »Nicht um neue Anschuldigungen vorzubringen, habe ich dieses Buch geschrieben«, sagt Levi, »sondern als Dokument für das Studium einiger zentraler Aspekte des menschlichen Seelenlebens.« Die zentrale Frage freilich, die Titelfrage, wird von Levi auf zweifach Weise beantwortet: Mensch ist, wer tötet, wer Unrecht zufügt oder erleidet. Kein Mensch higegen ist, wer darauf wartet, daß sein Nachbar endlich stirbt, damit er ihm ein Viertel Brot abnehmen kann, kein Mensch ist jener, der noch im Todeskampf beständig sein Jawohl murmelt. Und unauslöschlicher als die Tätowierungen auf dem Unterarm ist den Überlebenden die Erinnerung an die Zeit, in der sie keine Menschen waren, ins Gedächtnis eingebrannt.
