Diese Geschichte hat Leser in aller Welt bewegt: In einem Koffer versteckt, wird im Frühjahr 1945 ein dreijähriger Junge in das KZ Buchenwald gebracht. Wenn die SS das Kind findet, ist ihm der Tod gewiss. Mit Hilfe des illegalen Lagerkomitees könnte es verborgen werden, aber man fürchtet, die gesamte konspirative Arbeit zu gefährden. Aller Vernunft zum Trotz widersetzen sich zwei Häftlinge der Anweisung des ILK, den Kleinen mit einem Transport nach Bergen-Belsen weiterzuschicken. Herz und Gewissen siegen über die Parteidisziplin, denn das Überleben des Jungen ist längst zum Sinnbild für den Überlebenswillen der Häftlinge geworden. Der Roman entstand frei nach Motiven einer wahren Begebenheit, wurde jedoch als Tatsachenbericht und als Symbol des antifaschistischen Widerstandskampfes rezipiert. Die erweiterte Neufassung macht nun deutlich, dass Apitz die Rolle der Kommunisten viel konfliktiver anlegte und das Lagerleben gnadenloser darstellen wollte.
