Zwei Urprinzipien, untrennbar miteinander verbunden: Der als »Wunderknabe« geltende Novize Narziß, Denker und Asket, freundet sich im mittelalterlichen Kloster Mariabronn mit dem jungen Klosterschüler Goldmund an. Goldmund ist so ganz anders als Narziß: hübsch, von den Mädchen begehrt, ein charmanter Träumer, getrieben von Leidenschaft und Schuldgefühl. Als Goldmund beschließt, es seinem Freund und Vorbild gleichzutun und Mönch zu werden, ermutigt dieser ihn, das Kloster zu verlassen. Er solle sich selbst finden. Auf rastloser, abenteuerreicher Wanderschaft »von Dorf zu Dorf« und »von Frau zu Frau« lernt Goldmund nicht nur Freiheit und Liebe kennen, er erkennt auch die Abgründe seiner Seele und seine wahre Berufung: die zum Künstler. Doch schließlich führt ihn sein Weg zurück ins Kloster.
