'Die Philosophie des Abendlandes' wurde während des Zweiten Weltkriegs geschrieben. Die Grundlagen dafür entstammten einer Vorlesungsreihe über die Geschichte der Philosophie, die Bertrand Russell zwischen 1941 und 1942 an der Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia hielt. Das berühmte Standardwerk des Nobelpreisträgers für Literatur bietet eine Einführung in die westliche Philosophie von den Vorsokratikern bis ins frühe zwanzigste Jahrhundert. Es ist in drei Bücher unterteilt: die Philosophie der Antike, die katholische Philosophie und die Philosophie der der Neuzeit. Bertrand Russell hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt die Philosophie des Abendlandes im Zusammenhang mit ihren politischen und gesellschaftlichen Grundlagen begreifbar zu machen. Seine Darstellungen der einzelnen Epochen sind immer mit der Reflexion ihrer politischen und gesellschaftlichen Entstehungsbedingungen, mit eigenen Gedanken und Interpretationen verbunden; seine Schilderungen der großen Denker der abendländischen Kultur beziehen auch ihr Milieu, ihre Zeit- und Lebensumstände mit ein. Es war nicht zuletzt dieses Werk, das ihm dank seiner klassisch-schönen Sprache 1950 den Nobelpreis für Literatur eingebracht hat.
