Eine Besonderheit seiner Darstellungsweise liegt darin, die historischen Vorgänge und Verhältnisse aus orientalischer Perspektive zu beschreiben. Er richtet den Fokus auf die lokalen und regionalen politischen und wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse, die geistigen und religiösen Bewegungen, die Interessen und Konflikte der Akteure in den orientalischen Klientelreichen und Provinzen. Damit eröffnet der Autor einen anderen Blick auf die römische Geschichte und führt in eine weniger bekannte Welt ein. In jedem Falle legt er damit ein Buch über ein Thema vor, das so nocht nicht beschrieben wurde!
