Dreiundzwanzig Kriege haben Frankreich und Deutschland in den letzten vierhundert Jahren geführt. Für den jungen Ulrich Wickert war Krieg mit Frankreich etwas ganz Normales. Wickert erzählt entlang seiner Biografie, wie die Freundschaft der einstigen »Erbfeinde« schließlich zur Europäischen Union führte. Als Journalist erlebte er persönlich, wie französische Präsidenten sich mit deutschen Kanzlern anfreundeten oder miteinander fremdelten. Er lernte sie alle kennen und erzählt unterhaltend auch von deren menschlichen Schwächen. Ulrich Wickert wirbt in seinem neuen Buch sehr entschieden für diese zentrale Säule eines starken Europas. »Als Optimist glaube ich: Ein Krieg zwischen den ehemaligen ›Erbfeinden‹ Deutschland und Frankreich ist ›out‹; ist Geschichte. Wir erinnern uns zwar an die Vergangenheit, und das ist auch gut so, aber in der Erinnerung zu verharren bedeutet stets auch, in Verblendungen verhaftet zu sein. Doch in beiden Ländern muss viel mehr in die Zukunft Europas investiert werden. Das fängt beim Engagement für die deutsch-französische Verständigung an. Derzeit lernen immer weniger Schüler Französisch oder Deutsch. Zu wenig wird die Kultur der Nachbarn unterrichtet. Ich halte das für verhängnisvoll. Aber der Weg, den ich in den letzten Jahrzehnten mitgegangen bin, macht Mut. Ich wage zu sagen: Es gibt in der Geschichte kein Beispiel für eine solch rasante Entwicklung von einer ›Erbfeindschaft‹ hin zu dauerhaftem Frieden und Freundschaft nicht nur zwischen zwei Ländern, sondern in Europa. Und ein Ende dieser positiven Entwicklung ist nicht in Sicht.« Ulrich Wickert
