Er wurde nicht nur durch seinen Roman „Bekenntnisse einer Maske“; sondern auch durch seinen Selbstmord 1970 weltbekannt. Damals hatte er in Tokio in einer theatralischen Aktion einen Putsch zugunsten des japanischen Kaisers ausgerufen und dann vor aller Augen Harakiri begangen. In seinem autobiografischen Spätwerk „Sonne und Stahl“; das 1968 als Gesamttext veröffentlicht wurde, reflektiert Mishima vor dem Hintergrund seiner intellektuellen, spirituellen und physischen Entwicklung insbesondere die Beziehung zum eigenen Körper, zu dem er erst in seiner zweiten Lebenshälfte durch obsessives Training in Bodybuilding und Kampfkunst sowie einer Episode beim japanischen Militär einen positiven Bezug entwickeln konnte. Mittels einer eigenwillig subversiven und elektrisierend poetischen Metaphorik lässt er uns teilhaben an seiner Verwandlung vom „Mann der Worte“ zum „Mann der Tat.“ In dieser paradoxen Verfassung kreiert er, den parasitären Worten zum Trotz, eine mystische Sprache des Körpers, um seine persönliche „Fleischwerdung des Logos“ zu inszenieren.
