Niklas Luhmann versucht, über den Diskussionsstand in der Soziologie hinauszuführen. Er geht davon aus, daß ein Paradigmawechsel in der allgemeinen Systemtheorie auch für die Theorie sozialer Systeme neue Chancen eröffnet und die üblichen Einwände gegen einen »technologischen« Einsatz des Systembegriffs ausräumt. Das Buch versucht, eine begriffliche Komplexität und Interdependenz mit den Mitteln der normalen Sprache darzustellen. Die Einheit der Theorie liegt in der Abgestimmtheit einer großen Zahl von Begriffsentscheidungen, die zum Teil im Rückblick auf die soziologische Tradition und zum Teil im Anschluß an Vorgaben aus der Kybernetik, der Biologie, der Kommunikationstheorie und der Evolutionstheorie gewonnen sind. Luhmann sieht in diesem Kombinationsversuch eine wesentliche Voraussetzung für weitere Arbeiten an einer Theorie der modernen Gesellschaft.
