Über die Liebe zu philosophieren, ist verfänglich. Schwärmer und Schöngeister fühlen sich angesprochen, Fachleute für Ästhetik sehen sich zu feinsinnigen Formbetrachtungen herausgefordert. Gemeint sind sie alle nicht, nicht mit Platons Symposion. Wenn hier über die Liebe philosophiert wird, dann wird schnell erkennbar, dass mit ihr etwas zur Sprache kommt, das weder Sentimentalität noch Erbaulichkeit zuläßt. An den Reden, die im Symposion zum Lob des Eros gehalten werden, zeigt sich, dass Liebe Wahrheitssuche oder Selbstbezogenheit, Transzendenz oder Transzendenzlosigkeit bedeuten kann. Der philosophische Eros ist Wissen um die eigene Bedürftigkeit und somit Liebe zur Wahrheit; der sophistische Eros ist Verkennen der eigenen Bedürftigkeit und damit Liebe zum Ich. Dass der sokratische Eros, die Selbsthingabe an die Wahrheit, der überlegene ist, beweist sich an der Leichtigkeit, mit der Sokrates Widersprüche aufdeckt, denen seine Mitunterredner erliegen. So ist Sokrates in diesem Gelage nicht nur der Trinkfesteste, sondern auch der leidenschaftlichste Liebende. Deshalb verwundert es nicht, dass das Lob des Eros sich unversehens in das Lob des Sokrates verwandelt.
