Am 11. März 1937 hielt Robert Musil einen Vortrag, der wenig später im Druck erschien. Es sollte Musils letztes Buch zu Lebzeiten werden, ein schmales Büchlein, dafür umso erfolgreicher. Schon der Vortrag selbst stieß auf große Resonanz und musste mehrmals wiederholt werden, wohl auch wegen der politischen Umstände in einer Zeit, in der der gegenseitige Vorwurf der Dummheit »ungeheuerlich verbreitet ist«, wie Musil feststellt. Dieser Befund zeigt, wie aktuell seine Überlegungen geblieben sind und dass es auch und gerade heute wichtig ist zu sagen, dass Dummheit und Klugheit nicht nur vom Verstand abhängen, sondern auch vom Gefühl.
