Sein neunter Fall führt Kommissar Léon Duval noch einmal in die Vergangenheit, diesmal im Hinterland der Côte d’Azur. Das Staudamm-Unglück von Malpasset Ende der 1950er-Jahre wirkt bis heute nach. Der von Léon Duval sehr geschätzte Richter Dussolier wird auf den Stufen des Landgerichts in Grasse erschossen. Duval kannte den Richter gut, schließlich haben sie seinerzeit gemeinsam den Gangsterboss Cosenza dingfest gemacht. Alle Zeichen deuten auf einen Racheakt desselbigen, doch Cosenza streitet alles ab. Duval glaubt ihm, denn er erfährt, dass der Richter sich die Akte »Malpasset« hatte kommen lassen, in der es um die Staudammkatastrophe von 1959 im Hinterland von Cannes geht, bei der 423 Menschen ihr Leben verloren. Offenbar wollte der Richter diesen Fall wieder aufrollen. Musste er deshalb sterben? Duval arbeitet sich in den Fall ein, der schnell sehr kompliziert wird. Und sehr gefährlich. Duval sieht sich mit unguten Verstrickungen von Staat und Justiz konfrontiert – und mit realen Bedrohungen gegen sich und seine Familie.
