Gerhard Feldbauer schildert Vorgeschichte und Verlauf des Krieges, die internationale Solidarität mit Vietnam, den Widerstand in der US-Army, der vor allem von schwarzen Soldaten ausging, sowie die militärische Hilfe insbesondere der UdSSR, ohne die der Sieg der Befreiungsbewegung nur schwer möglich gewesen wäre. Den Ausschlag gab allerdings der Widerstandswille des vietnamesischen Volkes selbst. Er wurzelte in den Traditionen nationalen und antikolonialen Widerstandes, die der legendäre Ho Chi Minh zu mobilisieren verstand. Seine Bedeutung zeigte sich fast noch mehr nach seinem Tod. Denn als er 1969 verstarb, hinterließ er nicht, worauf vielfach spekuliert wurde, ein Vakuum, sondern eine kollektive politische Führung und eine Bevölkerung, in deren Mehrheit das Streben nach Unabhängigkeit tief verwurzelt war. Nicht unerwähnt bleiben die US-Kriegsverbrechen, für die dasjenige von My Lai im Mai 1968 zum Synonym wurde.
