Am liebsten würde er nach Rom und mit einer schönen Signorina auf der Piazza Navona sitzen. Doch jetzt sorgt dieser riesige Hund für neue Katastrophen … Eine skurrile Geschichte mit exzentrischen Figuren, irre wie das echte Leben. Fantes Protagonisten sind eng mit seinem eigenen Schicksal verbunden. Schnell wird spürbar, wie konfliktreich das Leben in den USA für eine streng katholische, italienische Einwandererfamilie war. »Westlich von Rom« ist die Zuspitzung aller Familienprobleme; hier bringt Fante auf den Punkt, was er im Zusammenhang mit Familie und Ehe zu sagen hat. Dieses Buch ist eine Hassliebeserklärung an die Familie in der Literaturgeschichte. Westlich von Rom erschien posthum 1986 bei Black Sparrow Press, Santa Rosa und 1987 auf Deutsch bei Eichborn, Frankfurt. Viele Jahre vergriffen, erscheint in der neuen Ausgabe im MaroVerlag erstmals der gesamte Umfang der amerikanischen Originalausgabe auf Deutsch: Der Roman wird von der Erzählung »Die Orgie« begleitet.
