Der 20. Juli 1944 zählt zu den Schlüsselereignissen der deutschen Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das missglückte Attentat von Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg auf Adolf Hitler und der anschließende Umsturzversuch sind zum Symbol des Widerstandes gegen den Nationalsozialismus geworden. Von den Ereignissen völlig überrascht, hatte das NS-Regime in Bezug auf die Gruppe der Verschwörer sofort festgelegt, dass in der Öffentlichkeit nur von einer »ganz kleinen Clique« die Rede sein dürfe – eine Formulierung, die mitunter noch heute das Bild des Widerstandskreises prägt. Die vorliegende Analyse zeigt erstmals anhand von zahlreichen Netzwerkvisualisierungen, was die NS-Ermittler tatsächlich über das große und komplexe zivile und militärische Netzwerk vom 20. Juli 1944 wussten, das so unterschiedliche gesellschaftliche Gruppen umfasste wie Offiziere, Verwaltungsbeamte, Diplomaten, Juristen, Industrielle, Theologen, Gutsbesitzer, Gewerkschafter und Sozialdemokraten. Zeitgenössische Briefe und Tagebücher verdeutlichen schließlich das geschickte Agieren der Verschwörer vor und nach dem Umsturzversuch und offenbaren zudem die Fehlerhaftigkeit der NS-Quellen.
